SUB LUMINA

Sub lumina is a light installation that was developed for Lunz am See, Lower Austria. A plunged floodlight thematizes the space under the water surface. The steep and eerie Lunzer Lake becomes the pit of the sunken. A ray of light from the depths of the lake breaks through the water surface and ends in a narrow cone in the night sky. Like from a sunken city, the light becomes a communicative gesture of human or even extraterrestrial presence. Here, light is not the means of illuminating an object, but an axis of communication. It points to its origin and what is "down there". At the same time it shows upward the night sky to its infinity and vanishes in the starry firmament.

Sub Lumina was part of Let´s sink - an art in public space project in Lunz, Austria curated by Leo Schatzl.
