Portraits of the Unknown (SPACE LADIES)

Installation of Photographs in public Space 11 black and white Prints on vinyl grid, 135 x 208 cm Installation view of Nibelungenbrücke - the main city bridge in Linz, Austria

Oversized portraits of women adorn the façades of the buildings at the head of the Nibelungen bridge in Linz, Austria. They comprise an archive of women cosmonauts and astronauts who, despite their intense participation in spaceflight, have hardly received any public recognition. While most people are familiar with the names of male space pioneers and even with the names of the first animals in space, the identity of the women pioneers has remained widely unknown. The project aims to give visibility to women in male-dominated professions and strives to conquer and appropriate public space. It positions photographic archives of these scientists in public space and generates visibility for the achievements of women.
