„Work“ is a recurring theme in the art of Katharina Gruzei. Austria's last Danube shipyard provides the starting point for her photo series Bodies of Work. In her pictures, the artist transforms the world of work she encounters into scenarios that seem weightless and reminiscent of science fiction. She depicts how the worker´s bodies and the workpiece merge within the industrial production. The precisely composed photographs meld different temporal entanglements: they engage with the anachronisms of the over 180-year-old company and, at the same time, display

a proximity to the aesthetics of space travel. The defamiliarized appearance of the scenery leads away from a specific segment of represented reality to novel aspects of time and space. The photographic findings of the series thus go far beyond a documentary approach.

Besides the title giving series of the exhibition Gruzei also presents her project “re-presenting” for which she steps in front of the camera herself. Using a wet plate technique from the 19th century allows her to pose contemporary questions on the image canon that derives from this century. In her experimental film „workers leaving the factory (again)“ Katharina Gruzei hints at the first film by the Lumière Brothers and approaches a vacant building of the Austrian tobacco industry. With flickering light and haunting sound, the artists stages the closed factory and links film history to reflections on our changing world of work.

Talk Event
What is the right time, right place for public art?

Austrian Cultural Forum, New York
11.10.2022 – 7pm

Talk Event at ACF New York
Tue 11th October 2022, 7pm

Melanie Kress, Associate Curator at High Line
in conversation with Katharina Gruzei, artist-curator of Right Time, Right Place Ysabel Pinyol-Blasi, Executive director & curator at Monira Foundation and participating artists
Eginhartz Kanter, Ann Messner, Nancy Nowacek, and Stefanos Tsivopoulos.

This talk is hosted in the framework of Right Time, Right Place – an exhibition at Mana Contemporary examining the ways in which public space has become a highly contested territory in the past decades. It is centered around artistic strategies for working with the layered meanings, realities, and possibilities of the public space. Ann Messner presents a selection of artworks realized in NYC since the 1970s. Eginhartz Kanter introduces the “Sculpture Park West”, an art project in Linz, Austria where artworks were informally installed on a traffic island between Highways. Nancy Nowacek gives an insight to a decade-long engagement with urban waterways, whereas Stefanos Tsivopoulos’s artwork “One Step Forward Two Steps Back - The White House”, will be screened as part of the talk.

In 2020, artist-curator Katharina Gruzei convened a group of Austria- and New York-based artists virtually to exchange ideas about working in the public realm. 2022 brings them together to make works in the public space of New York City. Their exchanges and creative acts culminate in Right Time, Right Place, a multi-generational exhibition. Katharina Gruzei gathers these specially commissioned pieces with existing artworks in this group show of emerging and established artists, hosted by Ysabel Pinyol-Blasi and the Monira Foundation at Mana Contemporary, New Jersey.

Public space has become a highly contested territory in the past decades. The term itself is a fluid concept that is constantly being redefined by its intricate cultural, historical, ecological, and political implications. Right Time, Right Place is an artist-curated exhibition that showcases works by international established and upcoming artists with different approaches to the public sphere. Issues regarding its use and accessibility are ever more relevant as privatization reaches a peak in cities such as New York, while the Covid crisis has only further influenced an existing zeal towards the regulation of public space, underlining critical aspects of this discussion.

Artists around the globe are taking to the public sphere, eschewing art-designated areas and traditional venues to connect with wider audiences, not necessarily represented by gallery visitors. Others are involving this sphere in their practice and containing it in other media. This show displays various artistic strategies, pointing out the potential of the public space as a social and political arena. Indeed, some works included question the fine boundaries between private and public, often blending them.

Right Time, Right Place revolves around informal and legally adjacent art practices that challenge the understanding of limitations. Furthermore, it underscores that the limits of art projects, activism, artivism and community building intersect, and that social change and artistic practice are often intertwined. Curfews and new rules of conduct, in particular, have changed the relationship to public space for urban residents. Efforts to maintain order and cleanliness have significantly restricted the scope of action for artists. These boundaries call once more for their exploration.

Explorative group projects are created through short term residencies in different places. The aim is to promote the exchange between the artists of different countries and cities and to encourage their networking with the local arts and cultural scene.

The project ist part of the Experimentierfeld series. It is not only an important impulse to promote art work, it also shows the potential of the cultural community to a wide audience – outside the national boarders. The project initiates collaborations between artists and their mutual support. In contrast to the predominantly insular workaday routines of artists, the power of collaborative processes is to be experienced here.

This years Experimentierfeld comes to Glasgow and in a three-part series of events at the Intermedia Gallery at CCA will explore the practice and projects of participating artists.

Austrian artist Katharina Gruzei will make a start on the second day of the series, followed by Austrian artist Rainer Noebauer-Kammerer and Glasgow-based British artist Edward Bruce. They will speak about their artistic practice and will give first insights into their Glasgow-specific projects which they are working on.
